THEY HAVE ARRIVED! At 11 a.m. on Thursday our Syrian family, a mother, father and two sons aged 10 and 17, arrived at the Victoria Airport. We received the call at 9 a.m. telling us that they would be arriving at 10:30 – 1 ½ hours notice! They were tired but happy to see a welcoming group from the steering committee and the mosque. They are staying with a family in Saanich for the time being and when they are settled we will involve them in finding a suitable place to call home. – Fran Stocks, Victoria Refugee Initiative
TODAY the Syrian Refugee Initiative is holding a fundraising dinner. Sunday, January 10, 2016 from 5 – 8 pm at Pearkes Arena (3100 Tillicum Road). Tickets $20. See Fran Stocks after the service today for tickets.

SingYourJoy is back for the start of our 5th anniversary season. Our Winter season is 13 weeks long and packed with great opportunities for singers ages 16-29. Highlighting this season is our work with guest clinician/conductor, Willi Zwozdesky. There is no cost to singers (unlike most community choruses) and the benefits are far-reaching – participants build musical and leadership skills, make new friends and grow in a safe fun environment. And we always give something back to the greater community. Our last day to welcome new and returning singers is January 11th (doors open at 6 pm for registration). Weekly Monday rehearsals from 7-9pm in the great acoustic space of Oak Bay United Church.
Family Faith Fair – February 7th, 2016. 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, Sunday, February 7th at Cadboro Bay United Church, 2625 Arbutus Rd (on B.C. Family Day weekend). The event is free of charge, with a nominal fee for treats at the World Café. Global events remind us of the need to celebrate our unity in diversity, the positive power of faith, and the need to work together for the well-being of the community and the world. The Victoria Multifaith Society has decided to combine World Interfaith Harmony Week with a fundraising effort for the Syrian refugee program, to welcome families who will be starting a new life here in Victoria. In addition to the World Café, the event will feature multicultural dance performances and colourful exhibits by a wide variety of religions such as Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc. There will also be a keynote speech by educator Dan Vaillancourt on The Soul of Education, and talented storytellers with tales from different world faiths on generosity and compassion. It’s hoped that as many people as possible will participate in this effort to support the refugees and provide a fun and educational activity for people of all ages, budgets, backgrounds and beliefs. For further information please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
